Executive Vice-President, Environment, Corporate Affairs & Legal
As Executive Vice-President, Environment, Corporate Affairs & Legal, Al is accountable for the company’s environment strategy and performance, as well as regulatory applications and compliance. He’s also accountable for ensuring Cenovus builds strong relationships and communicates effectively with stakeholders including investors, government, media, the public, employees and the communities where the company operates, including Aboriginal communities.
In December, Al will take on the additional accountability of Cenovus’s legal and corporate secretarial matters.
Prior to Al’s current role, he was Senior Vice-President of the company’s Christina Lake and Narrows Lake assets, where he was responsible for the overall development and operation of the two projects in northern Alberta. With more than 25 years in the oil and gas industry, Al has had a variety of roles including extensive regulatory, stakeholder and environmental experience.
Al worked as a regulatory lawyer where he was active in matters before the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board, the National Energy Board and the Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board. He joined Cenovus's predecessor company in 1999, and became Vice-President of Regulatory Services in 2003.
Al has a Bachelor of Physical Education, a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Calgary. He’s also earning an executive MBA, with a focus on global energy, from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. Al is a member of both the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association.
